This week saw the release of the 2025 State of Passwordless Identity Assurance report by HYPR.
This year's report progresses on last year’s expansion to include broader identity assurance trends as we tackle all aspects of the authentication chain of trust. Some of the highlights include respondents now indicating a clear path to majority in the next two years for passkeys to become the leading method of phishing-resistant MFA.
Along with that, we are continuing to see an increase in scale and effectiveness of AI attacks. Equally encouraging, while practitioners are making use of IDV tools, mostly in manual formats, there is broad recognition of the need to improve, automate, and reduce friction in these tools, typically following catalyst events.

A few of the stats from the report include:
- 49% of firms breached last year, 87% due to identity vulnerabilities – causing losses of an average of $2.5M per incident
- 40% experienced a GenAI related security incident in the last year, 95% encountered a deepfake attack
- Phishing-resistant authentication to surpass passwords and standard MFA within two years. Passkeys set to overtake legacy methods
- IDV tools are the most widely deployed IAM tool (63%) and a top choice for post-breach implementation (68%)
