A recent Cyber Security Tribe roundtable of senior executives from different industries highlighted the shared challenges and emerging strategies in this changing space.
The AI Adoption Dilemma
Organizations are eager to use AI to boost productivity, streamline operations, and enhance decision-making. However, this enthusiasm is tempered by significant concerns around data privacy, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance. Many leaders cited the risk of employees inadvertently exposing sensitive data by pasting it into public AI tools like ChatGPT or using unvetted SaaS applications with embedded AI features.
To mitigate these risks, some companies are developing internal large language models (LLMs) or deploying enterprise-grade AI platforms with stricter data governance. Others are implementing AI usage policies, awareness programs, and technical controls such as pop-up reminders and access restrictions.
Shadow IT and the Rise of Unregulated AI Use
A recurring theme was the proliferation of “shadow AI,” tools and applications adopted by business units without IT oversight. This trend mirrors the earlier rise of shadow IT and presents similar challenges in terms of visibility, control, and risk management. Participants expressed concern over employees using AI tools for ideation, content creation, or even coding without understanding the implications for data ownership and compliance.
The rapid integration of AI into SaaS platforms further complicates the landscape. Many tools now include AI features by default, often without clear labeling or transparency about data usage. This has prompted some organizations to revisit vendor contracts and introduce clauses prohibiting the use of customer data for AI training.
Policy Enforcement and Cultural Change
While most organizations have implemented AI usage policies, enforcement remains a challenge. Several leaders emphasized the importance of combining technical controls with cultural change. This includes fostering open communication between security teams and developers, encouraging responsible experimentation, and creating a safe environment for reporting mistakes.
Some companies have established AI governance committees and decision trees to evaluate new AI initiatives. Others are embedding AI risk assessments into their secure software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes, ensuring that traditional security controls remain in place even as new technologies are adopted.
The Talent Equation: Augmentation vs. Automation
The conversation also touched on AI’s impact on the workforce. While AI can augment human capabilities and increase efficiency, there is concern that it may displace entry-level roles and disrupt traditional career paths. Some organizations are proactively training employees, especially those less familiar with AI, on how to effectively use these tools. Others are exploring new performance metrics that reflect AI-augmented productivity.
Interestingly, the next generation of workers is entering the workforce with high AI fluency but limited awareness of enterprise security protocols. This underscores the need for targeted onboarding and continuous education.
Rethinking AI Accountability
One innovative perspective proposed during the discussion was to treat AI tools as “hybrid employees.” In this model, users are accountable for the outputs generated by AI, similar to how managers are responsible for the work of their teams. This framing could help organizations clarify roles, responsibilities, and expectations in an AI-augmented workplace.
Enabling Safe AI Adoption
The session concluded with a look at emerging solutions designed to enable safe and scalable AI adoption.
